Parliament - Student Leadership

Yangebup Primary School runs a unique leadership programme in the form of a school parliament. This innovative style of leadership focuses on student character development whilst giving students a real sense of autonomy as they help to make decisions that impact the whole school. The process of election teaches students about politics and the skills needed in everyday scenarios, such as leadership, honesty, cooperation, confidence and self-motivation. The public speaking opportunities and the team work requirements, also help students to develop lifelong skills in successful communication.

Senior students campaign for a ministerial position then form a cabinet under the guidance of their Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister. Each minister has a portfolio of duties to attend to and a team of workers to assist them. A shadow minister is also selected to keep the minister in check. Parliamentary duties include a range of tasks like: organising sport equipment, ringing sirens and co-ordinating fund raisers.
